SSC Ladies vs Military Ladies Match Review

They Came! … They Saw! … They Conquered!! Club Ladies Beat Military Ladies 4-2 in exciting Match!!

Friday 10th August saw our Club Ladies take on a travelling combined services Military Ladies side. The Military had a few drop outs and were only able to bring 6 on this occasion - but they kindly offered to double up and play twice … so the scene was set with the top 6 to decide the match.

First on was Emily Powell at 4. Emily had a very experienced opponent in Amy who was always going to be a tricky person to get the ball past. Emily took the first game with great determination and good running but unfortunately her opponent managed to keep her running and eventually she lost 3-1. Meanwhile Jodie Hodgkins at 2 was playing on Court 3 and moving her opponent, Michelle, around well. Jodie won the first game but then lost the 2nd to go one all. In the 3rd Jodie went 9-2 down but refused to give in … and clawed her way back to take the game 12-10! She then came back on for the 4th and closed out to win it 3-1 for the Club.

Rachel Pritchard was playing at number 3 Vs Jennifer. Rachel was playing some aggressive and well controlled squash and took the game to her very experienced opponent. She won the first and 2nd but dropped the 3rd, turning up the pace and style in the 4th and never letting Jennifer get back in. Another win for the Club. 3-1. A great start!

Tracy Waldron-Pegge then came in at 6, playing up the Club seeding due to an injury and against a young fit player, Lucy, Tracy settled in after the first game and put up a great fight nearly taking the 2nd and 3rd but a win to the Military 3-0.

Georgie Lincoln played at 5 and came on against another very experienced player, Danielle. Georgie refused to play Danielle's game and made her opponent move all over the court, dominating her and forcing errors she won 3-0.

So the Club were 3-2 up with the Captain's to play. Elaine Radcliffe for the Military and Linda Pritchard for the Club.

Linda was clearly ready to take the game to her younger opponent and started well & dominating every rally and forcing Elaine into the back corners and moving her relentlessly from side to side and so forcing errors. Linda kept the pressure on and never let Elaine settle with great accuracy and good lengths there was never a doubt - 3-0 to Linda. And a Club Victory! 4-2!!

It was great to have Mike Thurgur (as Linda and Rachel’s coach!) in the supporters galley clearly approving of how his players were getting on.

Ffion Collins then took on Amy. This was Ffion’s first senior match and she was a bit nervous at first. However she soon settled and her determined running and retrievals resulted in her taking a deserved game to lose 3-1. Lauren Slater was also making her debut and whilst she started slowly she was able to return many of Elaine’s shots and take a game in the process. 3-1 to the military.

New Club members Sophie Lumley and Emily Arnot took on Jennifer and Amy. Sophie really got into the game and played and won many good rallys. However, her much higher seeded player was too good on this occasion - 3-0. Emily was playing despite being injured at the beginning of the week, she moved well and gave Amy a hard time in many rallies. A bit more consistency could well have swung the game her way. 3-0.

Karen Squerie took on Danielle, having some great ralliess to make her work hard. Karen never gave in to her young, fit opponent but unfortunately lost 3-0. Becky Wright played Michelle who, at the number 2 seed was always going to be tough to beat … but Becky refused to give in and gave a great account of herself winning a number of rallys but eventually losing 3-0.

So the final game of the night was Georgie Lincoln playing again and taking on Lucy. Georgie took the game to her opponent from the outset and dominated many rallies with good accuracy and aggressive shots. Georgie never looked in doubt and came out a very worthy winner 3-1.

And so to ‘man of the match’ - Elaine selected Lucy for her all round game, great improvement and development of Ladies Squash. Linda had a hard job with so many sterling performances - she finally decided Georgie Lincoln who at just 15 should have the accolade for her 2 wins and great all round play.

The teams stayed on to eat and grab a beer or two - with a number of supporters helping to provide a really good atmosphere a great night was had by all. Hopefully another fixture can be arranged in the not too distant future.
